RAG: How AI Enriches Its Responses with External Data
Discover Retrieval-Augmented Generation, a technique that allows language models to access up-to-date and reliable information.
Imagine a virtual assistant capable of answering your questions by consulting precise documents in real time rather than relying solely on its fixed knowledge. This is exactly what RAG, or Retrieval-Augmented Generation, proposes. This approach combines information retrieval and text generation to make AIs more precise and up-to-date.
What is RAG?
RAG is a method that enables a language model to retrieve relevant information from an external database before generating a response. Instead of memorizing everything during training, the model “consults” documents at query time. This reduces hallucinations and allows new data to be easily integrated without retraining the entire model.
Why is RAG Necessary?
Large language models have knowledge limited to their training date. They can invent facts or provide outdated answers. RAG solves these problems by:
- Accessing up-to-date sources such as document databases or websites
- Reducing factual errors thanks to verifiable excerpts
- Enabling easy customization with private company data
How does RAG work step by step?
The process consists of three main phases. First, a retrieval system (often based on embeddings) identifies the documents most relevant to the question. Next, these excerpts are added to the prompt sent to the generation model. Finally, the model produces a response by relying on this additional information.
A Concrete Example of Use
Suppose an employee asks: “What is the 2025 leave policy?”. Without RAG, the model might give a general answer. With RAG, it retrieves the official internal document and cites the company’s exact rules.
question = "Politique de congés 2025"
docs = retriever.get_relevant_documents(question)
prompt = f"Réponds en utilisant ces infos : {docs}\nQuestion : {question}"
reponse = llm.generate(prompt)
Advantages and Limitations of RAG
RAG offers better accuracy and easy knowledge updates. It is also more economical than fully retraining a model. However, its quality depends heavily on the retrieval system: if the retrieved documents are poor, the final response will be too. Latency can also increase due to the retrieval step.
Practical Applications of RAG
RAG is found in enterprise chatbots, legal or medical assistants, and document analysis tools. Frameworks like LangChain or LlamaIndex make its implementation easier for developers who want to connect a model to their own data.
RAG represents a major advance in making AI more reliable and useful in everyday life. By combining search and generation, it paves the way for truly informed and adaptable assistants. Try it out on your own documents to see the difference!
